Annual Dragon Boat Race at Decatur Plant
The 11th Annual Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation Dragon Boat Race and Festival was held on May 13th at Point Mallard Aquatic Center Beach in Decatur, Alabama. The festival was presented by CMA, TAM, and TFA. This event helps to raise money for Decatur Morgan Hospital.
The opening ceremony kicked off with a Japanese taiko drum (wadaiko) performance. Then the “Awakening of the Dragon” by TAM President Kei Shimaji was held. Mr. Shimaji dotted the eye of the dragon which symbolizes the awakening of the spirit of the dragon. There were 40 teams consisting of up to 25 members, including 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. All skill levels are welcomed to participate, making it a fun and very useful team building sport. Each team participated in at least two races over a 250-meter course, with the winners advancing to the finals.
CMA Decatur plant and TFA entered three teams in the race. We would like to say thank you to all three captains’ for returning this year, and all the employees, family, and friends that raced or came to support us.
All money raised this year will continue to help towards funding the hospitals robotic surgical system. This system allows surgeons to perform complex surgical procedures with precision and accuracy. The healing time compared to conventional surgery is greatly improved.
Many news outlets covered the race and festival this year with WAAY 31 news team showing off our team shirts on their Facebook page. Toray teams are proud to support our local community and the Decatur Morgan Hospital. We hope to see everyone again next year at the races!
