Resin Transfer Molding
Resin Transfer Molding
Carbon Fiber Resin Transfer Molding
Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is a process in which a dry or semi-dry fiber preform is injected with a hot liquid resin within a closed mold before curing, producing a roughly net-shape part.
Carbon Fiber Resin Transfer Molding of any type is commonly used for applications where net-shape cure parts that require minimal machining are desired, including the sports equipment, industrial, and automotive industries.
Many subtypes and specialties of Carbon Fiber RTM exist, with variations on the preforms, infused resins, and methods of resin transference.
In particular, Toray Composite Materials America, Inc. (CMA) supplies prepreg and resin for use in Same Qualified Resin Transfer Molding (SQRTM), where a form made of pre-impregnated carbon fiber (prepreg) is cured in a closed mold while infused with the same resin already present in the prepreg. The additional pressure provided by the injected resin improves laminate consolidation while maintaining net shape, with no risk of resin bleed due to pressure.
