Our History
CMA began producing advanced composite materials in 1992. Originally named Toray Composites (America), Inc. (TCA) was incorporated in Pierce County, adjacent to Boeing’s Composite Manufacturing Center (CMC). Proximity to CMC enabled an efficient supply stream of our carbon fiber composite materials.
Now known as Toray Composite Materials America (CMA Tacoma) our Tacoma plant is a major exporter from Washington State and supplies a diverse customer base domestically and internationally. Our advanced carbon fiber composite materials were first used on the Boeing 777 and are now used for the primary structures of the 777 and 787 and will be used on the new 777X wing.
In 1997, the Toray Carbon Fibers America, Inc. (CFA) plant was established in Decatur, Alabama. The Decatur plant was incorporated in Morgan County, an area with a history in the chemical industry that offers ideal conditions for carbon fiber production. Now known as Toray Composite Materials America, Inc (CMA Decatur), our Alabama plant operates production lines from precursor to carbon fiber and has a diverse base of customers in aerospace, defense, industrial and automotive. The CMA Decatur team manufactures Standard Modulus, Intermediate Modulus, and Intermediate Modulus Plus (IM+) for customers around the world.
Toray CMA’s plant in Spartanburg, SC is an integrated facility producing precursor, carbon fiber, and prepreg in a single manufacturing facility. The plant is a cornerstone of Toray’s growth in North America and provides critical supply chain redundancy and diversification.
Merging for the Future
The Tacoma, Decatur, and Spartanburg teams share the same philosophy and culture and have a proven track record of providing industry-leading solutions for our clients. We are able to build on our success by utilizing our collective knowledge and expertise and being responsive to our customer’s needs with a nationwide footprint.
