Fall Science Classes

On November 12th and 13th of 2019, Tacoma CMA associates volunteered to visit Elk Plain School of Choice and Cougar Mountain Middle School to teach an experimental science class to 7th and 8th grade students. Over the course of two days associates presented to six classes, totaling about 160 students.

Each class had a volunteer begin the presentation with an introduction of CMA with the other volunteers assisting during the classes. The presentation focused on environmental issues such as global warming and water shortage. The lesson began with global warming and introduced the students to carbon fiber and prepreg. Students learned the process to make carbon fiber and prepreg as well as the environmental benefits from it, such as reducing the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. They were able to see and discuss finished products made with carbon fiber and discuss future career opportunities.

Next, we focused on Toray’s solution to water shortage. Presented to the students was a product made by Toray called the Ultrafiltration Membrane as well as facilities that are used to process water for consumption. Students gathered into small groups as volunteers demonstrated the process using a UF Membrane by filtering clear water from orange juice.

CMA is proud to discuss science and innovation with the local community and looks forward to visiting more schools in the future.
